GAH - Techno Skills FAIL

I need to trim an MP3 file. I have tried Moviemaker - it crashed. I have tried Audacity - it ignores 'save selection' and 'trim outside selection'. Can anyone point me at an MP3 trimmer that might actually work for me?

Are you fairly versed in Audacity? Because I know Jack about it but I know someone who does - so if advice might help I could go ask her...
