Love Bites - Character Bio: Judd

This is Judd. He’s about the most wholesome tattoo artist you’ll ever see. He’s also got the least tattoos of any tattoo artist. My co-worker’s twenty-year old daughter – a trainee nurse mind you – has more tattoos than Judd. He doesn’t even have any on his chest. He’s definitely not got any tattoos on his chest because we got a good look when he went out in just his nothing but his dressing gown and was accosted by his neighbour’s mother. His neighbour’s mum thought he was her son’s boyfriend. She wishes.

Judd’s married to Colleen about whom he’s completely nuts. Happily Colleen is totally nuts about him as well. Aww, sweet.
The majority of the time Judd is so laidback as to be practically horizontal. If your neighbour’s homophobic mother had a meltdown, wandered into your house, and started cleaning up then you’d probably have a few words to say. Starting with “get out”, but not Judd, he’s completely cool about the whole situation. He’s still completely relaxed about things when her husband, her son, and her son’s fiancé all troop in to continue their huge drama. Judd was remarkably relaxed to find Colleen’s nephew handcuffed in the living room after some weird sexual that I had no interest in watching.

Given Judd’s general manner and his job you might think that he’s a little bit rock and roll, maybe rides a motorbike, and just possibly his laid back demeanour is due to copious amounts of herbage. You’d be wrong though since when he and Colleen DO score some wacky baccy from Judd’s useless and plot sucking leech of an employee they’re rendered pretty much totally non-functional. They almost miss the christening of Judd’s nephew which would be bad enough but since Judd is the godfather and has to make a speech… For some reason I thought Judd was Jewish, although he’d have to be pretty much secular and non-religious what with the tattooing, but I guess not. Even so, Judd and his family do not match. They’re pretty WASP-like, especially his mother, and he’s absolutely not. His mother also seems to have some major issue with Colleen. Maybe before he met Colleen he was all uptight and WASP-y and she transformed him. As well as his brother, who has a very young family, Judd has an incredibly uptight and controlling sister (for some reason uptight and controlling women are in sitcoms but uptight and controlling men are the stuff of dramas and horror movies), who has a teenage daughter. Judd’s interaction with his niece proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s Not Cool. Well-meaning and fun but not even a little bit able to cope with a teenage girl let alone one who thinks she might be pregnant. Bless his rose-tinted spectacles but he’s SHOCKED that teenage girls might have sex. Really dude?

He’s endlessly good natured though in pretty much all eventualities. It’s probably for the best he and Colleen don’t have any kids as they’d run rings around him. Maybe Judd’s childlike side is enough to fill any maternal cravings that Colleen might have. Certainly there’s an adorably childlike enthusiasm when he meets his heroes such as Famous Baseball Player (who the viewer, but not Judd, finds out is a total git) and Sex Advice Dude. The fact that Judd watches and reads how to improve his relationship with Colleen is a pretty interesting character quirk but one that is sadly ignored apart from being used as a stepping stone to a conversation about sexual fantasies. It’s not actually incongruent with his character since pretty much the only thing he gets anxious about is keeping Colleen happy.

Awww, Judd was so sweet. It's too bad he and Colleen didn't get time to be developed more fully; I think a lot of the stories on Love Bites would have been a lot more engaging if they'd been fleshed out or, actually, a little racier. Sometimes being on network doesn't pay.

Yeah, the stories generally could've done with some space to breathe. I bit more sex would've definitely been good :D Although I did appreciate Grunny dressed as a fireman for Colleen's fantasy, hehe.

And the fact that he tries different things to keep his Colleen happy is totally adorable to me!

If Judd and Colleen had their own show I think it would have gone better then Love Bites.....shame :(

I had those same thoughts that they could have built a sitcom around Judd and Colleen. Because their stories were the most watchable and funniest on Love Bites.

On a side note Grunny will be a guest star on Psych in Oct. and Hawaii 5-0 in Nov. And there's a chance his character could be upgraded to recurring on Hawaii 5-0.

Yeah, and the upcoming movies Chez Upshaw and...hee!...Mega Spider. I can't wait. :D The Hawaii 5-o episode sounds like it might be particularly promising though; I foresee some crossover fanfics brewing.

Yeah, Syfy must have run out of ideas for giant snake movies. Still it will be fun seeing Grunny in one of those goofy Syfy Channel movies.

A cheesy movie can be fun sometimes :) I don't know what happened to the other sy-fy movie he was growing a beard for. Hopefully this one will go through.

Yeah I thought Judd and Colleen made a fun and believable couple :)

I've only seen one episode of Psych (Sendhil's, heh) and I really wasn't a fan but hopefully Grunny will have a good role. I've not seen Hawaii 5-0 but his role sounds fun :)
