I love the imagery of Matt as the grizzled hardass graveyard shift cop with a soft spot for the "night people." The kind of cop who could have made detective easily if he'd wanted it. He just didn't want all the interdepartmental political baggage that goes along with the job.
When he called himself an "old man" I pictured this version of Matt with salt and pepper hair with a little more salt than pepper.
