RIP Heroes
May. 15th, 2010 08:17 amSo Tim Kring has finally been dragged away from the corpse of Heroes with only the vague suggestion that he might be allowed to kick at it for a 'special finale event.' I'm more surprised at how many people were surprised than anything else. It's not just a matter of the ratings and the atrocious writing but of the market share, you only have to look at the way the merchandising slid down the plughole:
1) The action figures were cancelled - meaning I could have a Linderman, six different Peter's, two Claude's, but no Nathan. WTF?
2) The video game was cancelled.
3) Remember Heroes origins? That never raised after the Writer's Strike ate it.
4) One and only one novel. I don't even want to guess how many 'Enterprise' novels there are.
5) The Official Magazine died
6) No new publicity shots for season 4 which meant no new posters etc
It looks to me as though the writing was on the wall for a LONG while. Merchandising can be the thing that turn a non-profitable show into a profitable one.
But
There's no reason for the fic to die. There's been a steady amount of fic since season 4 started and hardly any of it I've seen had ANYTHING to do with season 4. The Heroes slash community is certainly smaller than it was, but I think it's mature enough and settled enough to keep producing exciting, creative stories without needing fresh episodes for impetus.
What do you guys think, will you keep writing/reading or is that it for you now?
