I started my 'Approaching Literature' module on Saturday. It's probably a bad sign that while discussing bits and bobs of Austen's approach to the literary form (whatever you think of her stories or characters her grasp of the varying narrative techniques was exceptional) I was also thinking about my own stuff. I've realised that:
My narrators are REALLY lazy :P Even my first person narration is very uninvolved. It's not so much a weakness (I hope) as a missed opportunity that I want to work on.
My inability to write past tense without major effort is every bit as weird as I suspected
BUT the present tense 'adds immediacy' as does dialogue.
Dialogue is a form of first person writing (yeah probably really obvious but I never thought of it before)
My stuff is vaguely 'realist'. Very vaguely. :P
