Whoo hoo, Grunny got a pilot! Or even better, Grunny got the lead in a pilot.

It does seem to make poor old Love Bites even more dead in the water than before but it's good to see Grunny being considered for proper lead roles.


But, I'm a fan of US detective shows and I know how this sort of thing is supposed to go. Your main character has to have some kind of 'hook' on which the audience can hang. Monk had OCD and his wife's murder, The Mentalist has his fake psychic schtick and murder of his wife and child, Lie To Me has its body language, and Columbo (possibly the daddy of them all) had his rumpled clothes, his cigar, and his 'just one more thing'. 

So what does Big Mike have? 

  
'Grunberg will play the title character, a plus-sized detective and a force of nature in the San Diego PD. One of the best in his field, he gets things done, knows all the right people, gets along with everyone, and knows all the best places to eat.'

Let's break that down, he's a 'plus-sized' 'force of nature' who 'gets along with everyone' and 'knows all the best places to eat.'

So... he's a jolly fat guy? That's his hook: Santa solves crime? Oh I'm sorry, '[h]is greatest challenge in his romantic life', so he's Santa and he can't get laid. Because as we know women never find cuddly guys sexually attractive and a good looking man with a decent job, an easy going nature, and apparently the inclination to take you to lots of restaurants is ALWAYS going to struggle for dates.

I want this to be an awesome pilot. I want it to go to series and be a huge success. But please, please don't let it all be fat jokes and how no women will touch him with a ten foot pole!

However, I have just made the assumption that Mike is straight. Maybe he's not. Maybe he'll be gay and his problem with his romantic life is having to fight off bear-lovers with sticks. A girl can dream, right?

boudecia7  has found this article which has more details, all of them good. I love that Mike is a grown up, what with the profanity, relentlessness, and understanding of human nature. Best of all he's apparently first-rate at his job. Altogether this looks pretty awesome and a great role for Grunny.  

Could still do without the emphasis on his size though :P

I hate to burst the bubble but if you look at at the status of the pilot's it says: "pilot rejected".

Yeah but it also has the season listed as '2010' and the report this morning said Grunny's casting 'lifts the contingency on the pilot' so maybe it had been rejected but now they've changed their minds?

Yeah, I think that's what happened. It seems to me that it got pitched, rejected, and has now been dusted off. The reports of him getting the lead are all from yesterday and that little summary I found is older than that. Hopefully the details still stand though :)

Do we really know what Cooper's type is? Apart from drug dealers that is :P I imagine he gets slashed with Ben a lot.

there was that one guy Cesar, but they only showed him once and never again after that

and yeah, it is REALLY HARD to find fic that isn't slashing him with ben :( so far i've only found maybe 2 that were any good

Yeah I remember you saying Southland fic was a bit lacking.

It's very tempting :D But I don't have the eps on DVD so I wouldn't be sure of characterisation etc. (Someone else suggested I do some True Blood fic with Eric, which is tempting too).
