Obsession's part of it, relationships for sure. You could go with what we were talking about last night, the nature of individuality and humanness, especially as those things get stripped away physically more and more. "Perfection" and what it really might mean to have no flaws is another theme kicking around.

Power struggles, possession, love--I'm not a huge Ray Carver fan but his story What We Talk About When We Talk About Love makes some really interesting points about the subject that you hit on from time to time too--that a character's obsession IS an expression of love whether or not that's what people want to think of love as. It might not be healthy or desirable, but there it is.

Characterization is always really important to what you do and I'd consider the concept an abstraction, you could go with that. I was really warming up here and now I have to take the kids to school. I'll catch you on IM in a few minutes, sorry for babbling :P
